Doctoral Research: My research explores the interplay between Old Norse-Icelandic literature and language and “northern” poetry of the twentieth century. What a niche and unusal topic you might say! But in actual fact, this is a pervasive strand in twentieth-century poetic discourse, concerning such poets as Hugh MacDiarmid, W.H. Auden, George Mackay Brown, and Norman Nicholson. Ideas of regionalism, attachment to place, and the relationship between memory and materiality (and geology in particular), hover on the periphery of this topic and my research interests more generally.
