Black History Month 2022: events and resources

To commemorate Black History Month 2022, the English Faculty will be highlighting the fundamental contributions of Black writers and scholars to global literary history – we will be sharing events taking place in Oxford and ongoing resources that explore these contributions via our Twitter and Facebook channels.

Read on to see a selection of events taking place at the University this month. Many of the events are open to the public; click on the links for further information and registration details.

13 October: Tinashe Mushakavanhu, 'The Afterlives of Dambudzo Marechera'.

3:30 pm, Pavilion Room, St Antony’s College. Tinashe Mushakavanhu presents his work on the afterlives of iconic and radical Zimbabwean writer, Dambudzo Marechera, whose writing in the 1970-80s inspired a new generation of Zimbabweans.

19 October: Paulo Scott (Afro-Brazilian author), Reading and Q&A with author

2pm, Colin Matthews Room, Ground Floor of the Radcliffe Humanities Building. Join award-winning Afro-Brazillian author Paulo Scott – Phenotypes (2021), Nowehere People (2014), Ithaca Road (2013) – for a reading and Q&A session.

19 October: Sancho's Britain

5.30pm, English Faculty, Lecture Theatre 2. The award-winning actor Paterson Joseph will be reading from his new novel, The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho, which reimagines the life and times of the maverick 18th-century Black writer and composer. All welcome.

20 October: Andrew Kahn (Oxford), ‘Pushkin and Blackness’

20 October: Rosemarie Buikema (Utrecht), ‘The Curation of European Imperial Legacies’

5:15pm, Postcolonial seminar, Seminar Room K, English Faculty.

24 October: Roundtable: “Negritude and its Legacies”

Cécile Bishop (Oxford), Jane Hiddleston (Oxford), and Phillip Rothwell (Oxford). 2pm, Room 2, Taylorian.

28 October: AfOx Insaka with Dr Machilu Zimba (UCL) and Dr. José Lingna Nafafé (Bristol)

17:30 – 18:30 BST Blavatnik School of Govt, Africa Oxford Initiative. Dr Machilu Zimba discusses the barriers international graduate students face in higher education and Dr. José Lingna Nafafé presents on the 17th century Black Atlantic Abolitionist Movement in this week's AfOx Insaka (a hybrid event).

29 October: Euton Daley’s Unlock the Chains Collective: Still Breathing

7pm, Sheldonian Theatre. Still Breathing is a powerful tribute to the fallen and to the millions fighting for a just world. It is both a celebration and a remembrance with live music, song, dance and ritual as the company further develops its storytelling and protest form of theatre.

3 November: Elleke Boehmer, ‘Decolonising Debates: the case of Nelson Mandela (VSI)’, in discussion with Ankhi Mukherjee

5:15pm, Postcolonial seminar, Wadham College.
