The Death of Professor Christopher Butler

It is with regret that we share the sad news that Professor Christopher Butler died on 18 March 2020 of heart failure in the John Radcliffe Hospital. The Faculty of English sends its sincere condolences to his wife, Gillian, and their family on their loss.

Many of us will remember with fondness Christopher Butler’s energetic presence as a colleague, lecturer, and tutor. He was a wonderful explicator, a quick and inspiring thinker. His published work included Early Modernism: Literature, Music, and Painting in Europe, 1900-1916 (OUP, 1994), Interpretation, Deconstruction, and Ideology (OUP, 1984), and Postmodernism: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2002) and Modernism: A Very Short Introduction (2010).

It is expected that the funeral will be private, but a memorial service will be arranged when gatherings resume.
