The Faculty is pleased to annouce that Simon Armitage has been awarded the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry 2018. Having written poetry throughout his life, Professor Armitage has published 21 collections of poems, and has produced new translations of old poems including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
The award is decided by a committee of scholars and authors, chaired by the Poet Laureate. Summarising their choice, the current Poet Laureate, Carol Anne Duffy praised Professor Armitage for his work “giving voice to those rarely admitted into poetry, and extending an arm around the unheard and the dispossessed”. The Queen will present him with the medal in 2019.
