Graduate Funding & Scholarships

Faculty Studentship Information

The Faculty has one of the largest number of funding opportunities available of any English department in the country.  Currently, about 20 students a year on our master's programmes are funded and about 60 students over the three years of our doctoral programme. Most of our scholarships are offered to UK students, but some of the studentships for both the master's programmes and the doctoral programme are awarded to overseas students. The University offers an increasing number of scholarships to improve access for under-represented and socio-economically disadvantaged groups, as part of its Graduate Access Strategy. 

Information about internal and external funding is available on the Oxford University website. Available scholarships for postgraduate study in English vary from year to year. The list below is indicative of the scholarships that are typically offered, but for almost all scholarships, all applicants submitting their application by the relevant deadline and meeting eligibility criteria will be considered. Please see the section at the bottom of the page for the small number of scholarships which require special application.  

Studentships available for entry 2027-28 with no further application required

AHRC Doctoral Landscape Awards  
There is no separate AHRC application form; apply to your DPhil programme as normal. All applicants will be considered by their faculty for nomination to AHRC selection, alongside other available scholarships such as Clarendon.   

Selection will be made by the Humanities Division Scholarship Selection panel, from a gathered field of doctoral candidates nominated by their admitting faculty, following the admissions assessment process. The same process is followed for Wolfson Postgraduate, Clarendon, and any other Oxford scholarship scheme for which nomination/selection is managed at divisional level. Successful candidates will be notified by the end of March 2027.  

Doctoral Landscape Awards (DLAs) will provide course fees and UKRI stipend for a minimum of 3.5 years up to a maximum of 4 years. Additional funding will be available to support training and development opportunities, including professional placements. Award holders will be expected to engage with collaborative skills training activity through the ‘Landscape South’ consortium of universities in the south-east and south-west.  

Unfortunately, on-course graduate students are no longer eligible for AHRC funding, and there are no other divisional sources of funding for on-course students.  

Clarendon Scholarships 

The faculty nominates candidates each year for Clarendon Scholarships, which cover course fees and a grant for living expenses. All applications are automatically considered, so there is no need to submit any further information. The Humanities Division offers around 35 Clarendon scholarships a year. Smaller numbers of other scholarships are also offered. All eligible candidates are automatically considered for these scholarships. 

Cecily Clark Studentship 

Available to MSt or MPhil students of English Medieval Studies, with a preference for subjects relating to Middle English Philology. Available to Home students only.  

Jeremy Griffiths Studentship  

Available to candidates studying a subject related to the History of the Book before 1550 (held at St Hilda's College). Open to applicants for the MSt 650-1550 and MPhil (Medieval Studies). Available to Home students only.  

Violet Vaughan Morgan Studentship 

Available to candidates studying on any of the English MSt strands. Available to Home students only.

Ertegun Postgraduate Scholarships in the Humanities

Available to UK, EU and overseas students applying for entry to master's and doctoral programmes. Please see the programme website for more information and for the Supporting Statement template that must be uploaded with your Graduate Application Form. 

Financial declarations
