Doctoral Research: My thesis looks at the adoption of the roman alphabet for the writing of Old English in early mediaeval England, as well as the interaction between the roman and the runic alphabet. I'm interested in how the roman alphabet was adapted for the use of writing three Old English front vowels and what factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic, played a part in the establishing of orthography. I look at the earliest epigraphical, numismatic and manuscript evidence up to the end of the eighth century.
