Professor Noël Sugimura

Her research interests focus mainly on seventeenth century literature and culture, specifically in relation to the Restoration and Milton. Her teaching and research interests focus on the intersection of early modern philosophy, intellectual history, and literature.

Her first book, ‘Matter of Glorious Trial: Spiritual and Material Substance in Paradise Lost' explored the metaphysic of Paradise Lost; her current book, ‘Perplexity of Contending Passions’, which is under contract with Oxford University Press, explores early readers of Paradise Lost and the reception history of Milton in the context of eighteenth century enlightenment cultures.

She is also editing William Empson’s Milton’s God for OUP. She has published on early modern dramatists and poets other than Milton too, and welcomes supervision on a wide number of topics.
