My research is primarily in twentieth-century Anglo-American literature, particularly the cross-cultural dimensions of modernism’s production and reception. I seek to understand the works of expatriate, cosmopolitan, or cross-cultural writers in relation to the national and international contexts that have conditioned their circulation, combining close textual analysis with literary sociology to explore how institutions, publishing networks, and modes of circulation shape literary identities, reputations, and canons.
My first book project, based on my doctoral thesis, Resident Aliens: T. S. Eliot and W. H. Auden’s Transnational Self-Marketing, examines how two of the most influential Anglo-American expatriate poets manipulated their multifaceted identities in relation to different audience groups to shape their public reception. In addition to this, I have written articles published in the Review of English Studies and ELH on Eliot and The Criterion, and Eliot, Auden, and the CIA-funded magazine, Encounter, and have a forthcoming chapter on ‘Evelyn Waugh and the English Educational Establishment’ which will be published in the Oxford Handbook of Evelyn Waugh. Recently, I’ve been developing a new research project, which will explore Anglo-American little magazine editorial cultures ‘after’ modernism and how these periodical networks negotiated high modernism’s cosmopolitan values amidst a period increasingly interested in national identity and national canon consolidation.
For the 2026-2027, I am available to teach the following papers or supervise undergraduates dissertations on topics falling within the early twentieth century.
I have experience teaching Prelims Paper 3 (Literature in English 1830-1910), Prelims Paper 4 (Literature in English 1910-Present), and FHS 5 (Literature in English 1760-1830). I’ve also offered tutorials on ‘Writers and the Cinema’, ‘James Joyce’, ‘The Politics of Literary Criticism’ to visiting students.
I am a Study Adviser in Humanities subjects at Balliol College while also teaching undergraduates and visiting students reading English Literature at various colleges.
For the 2026-2027 academic year I am available to take on teaching for any of the above papers.
I am available to supervise undergraduate dissertations on a range of texts and authors — particularly, T.S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Evelyn Waugh, modernist print cultures — falling within the early to mid-twentieth century and would welcome enquiries from students hoping to work in these areas. I have also co-supervised an MSt dissertation on T. S. Eliot’s engagement with Old English and would be keen to hear from MSt students seeking co-supervision to work on Eliot, Auden, or early twentieth-century print cultures.
