Representing Shell Shock: a return to Ford Madox Ford and Rebecca West
My research interests centre on the realist novel. My doctoral thesis, which I am currently preparing for publication, focused on experiments in realist narrative during the Edwardian period, with particular attention to novels by Joseph Conrad, H. G. Wells, Arnold Bennett and May Sinclair. I have work published or forthcoming on first world war literature, modernism and neo-Hegelian philosophy, and mid-nineteenth-century realist cultures in Britain and France. Broad research interests include: 19th and 20th century literature; the novel; comparative literature; critical theory.
At St Hilda's, I teach Prelims Papers 1B (Approaches to Literature), 3 (1830-1910), and 4 (1910-Present Day). I also teach FHS Paper 6 (The Avant-Garde), and supervise undergraduate and MSt dissertations on aspects of nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature and culture.
